Biography
Steve Baylis is an abstract painter in Squamish, British Columbia.
He builds oil and cold wax paintings on Baltic birch through a repeatable process of stain, bleach, transparent ground, glaze, and deliberate brushwork.
Biography
Baylis studied art, illustration and design at Capilano University in the IDEA Program in 2005 under Kiff Holland. His work has been exhibited in gallery and public-art settings and is held in private collections internationally.
His practice brings a structured studio method together with meditation and intuitive decision-making. The process lets him concentrate on one task at a time while giving memory, experience, and feeling space to emerge.

Process and intuition guide the work.
The order of my process matters because it lets me focus on one task at a time. When I become stuck, it gives me a route back. That structure is what allows me to take risks and work spontaneously.
I work through the same sequence, but respond to the painting as it develops, making a mark, stepping back, and looking again. Every mark is intentional. I continue adjusting colour and balance as the painting develops.
My meditation practice informs this way of working. Memory, experience, and feeling enter through the making. The finished painting becomes a record of memory, experience, feeling, and intention.
